India’s Electric Leap: Maruti’s e-Vitara Set for Japan Export, Made in India
New Delhi, India – In a significant milestone for India’s burgeoning automotive industry and its ‘Make in India’ initiative, Maruti Suzuki is poised to embark on a momentous journey: exporting its upcoming all-electric SUV, the e-Vitara, to its home market, Japan. This move underscores India’s growing prowess as a manufacturing hub for advanced automotive technology and marks a pivotal moment in Maruti Suzuki’s global electrification strategy.

The e-Vitara, which had its world premiere in production form at the 2025 Bharat Mobility Global Expo in New Delhi, is set to launch in India in September 2025. However, even before its domestic rollout, the electric SUV is making headlines for its international prospects. It will join the ranks of the Fronx, Baleno, and the 5-door Jimny (known as Jimny Nomad in Japan) as the fourth made-in-India Maruti model to be shipped to Japan. This is particularly notable as the e-Vitara will be Maruti Suzuki’s first-ever electric vehicle to be exported to its technologically advanced home country.
Manufacturing for the e-Vitara will commence at Maruti Suzuki’s state-of-the-art facility in Gujarat. This facility is rapidly becoming a cornerstone of Suzuki’s global production network, especially for its electric vehicle ambitions. The decision to export the e-Vitara to Japan speaks volumes about the quality standards and manufacturing capabilities that India now offers. Japan, known for its stringent automotive quality benchmarks, accepting an Indian-made EV is a testament to the nation’s manufacturing evolution.
The e-Vitara itself is based on the robust Heartect-e platform and promises a compelling package for EV enthusiasts. It will be offered with two battery pack options: a 49 kWh and a larger 61 kWh unit. The latter is expected to deliver an impressive driving range of over 500 km on a single full charge, addressing one of the primary concerns of EV buyers – range anxiety. Safety is also a priority, with the e-Vitara boasting 7 airbags as standard and higher variants featuring Level 2 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) technology. Other anticipated features include a Next-gen Suzuki Connect, a Harman Infinity Sound System, and a 10-way adjustable driver’s seat.
Maruti Suzuki is adopting a cautious yet confident approach to its EV roadmap. The success of the e-Vitara, both domestically and in international markets like Japan and Europe (where exports to over 100 countries are planned), will significantly influence the pace and expansion of Maruti’s future electric lineup, which is expected to include electrified versions of popular models like the Fronx, Wagon R, and Jimny.
This export strategy is not merely about volumes; it’s about establishing India as a reliable and high-quality producer of electric vehicles on the global stage. As the world transitions towards sustainable mobility, India’s role as a manufacturing hub for EVs, exemplified by the Maruti e-Vitara, is set to grow exponentially, contributing significantly to both the nation’s economy and the global push for a greener future. The made-in-India e-Vitara is more than just a car; it’s a symbol of India’s accelerating journey into the future of electric mobility.
