Tesla Launched In India, First Showroom Opens in Mumbai

Tesla Electrifies India: Model Y Leads the Charge as First Showroom Opens in Mumbai

Mumbai, July 15, 2025 – After years of anticipation, speculation, and policy discussions, Elon Musk’s Tesla has officially driven into the Indian market, marking a significant milestone for the global electric vehicle (EV) giant. The grand inauguration of Tesla’s first showroom, the “Tesla Experience Centre,” took place today in Mumbai’s upscale Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). The event, attended by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, heralded a new era for premium electric mobility in India.

The Debut Model: Tesla Model Y Takes Center Stage

Leading Tesla’s charge into the Indian subcontinent is the highly popular Tesla Model Y crossover SUV. The sleek 4,000-square-foot showroom in BKC currently showcases two variants of the Model Y, giving Indian consumers their first up-close look at the celebrated electric vehicle.

Pricing and Variants:

The Tesla Model Y will be offered in India in two rear-wheel-drive (RWD) variants, with their ex-showroom prices significantly impacted by India’s substantial import duties on Completely Built Units (CBUs):

  • Tesla Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD):
    • Price (Ex-showroom): ₹59.89 lakh
    • On-road Price (approx.): ₹61.07 lakh
    • Claimed Range (WLTP): Up to 500 km
    • 0-100 km/h acceleration: 5.9 seconds
  • Tesla Model Y Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD):
    • Price (Ex-showroom): ₹67.89 lakh
    • On-road Price (approx.): ₹69.14 lakh
    • Claimed Range (WLTP): Up to 622 km
    • 0-100 km/h acceleration: 5.6 seconds

These prices position the Model Y firmly in the luxury EV segment, competing with established players like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and BYD Seal/Sealion 7, which currently offer more competitive pricing due to local assembly or lower import tariffs. For instance, the Model Y’s starting price in India is considerably higher than in major markets like the US (around $56,000 before taxes/credits) or China (approximately ₹31.57 lakh).

Beyond the Car: An Ecosystem Approach

Tesla’s entry isn’t just about selling cars; it’s about building an entire ecosystem. The company has secured warehousing space and is actively beefing up its local hiring to support its operations. Initial deliveries of the Tesla Model Y in India are expected to commence from September 2025 (Q3 2025 for RWD and Q4 2025 for Long Range RWD), giving Tesla time to fine-tune logistics, complete regulatory processes, and establish its crucial after-sales infrastructure.

Charging Network Expansion:

A critical component of Tesla’s strategy in India is the rollout of its advanced charging network. The company plans to install its next-generation V4 Superchargers across the country, starting with four charging stations in Delhi equipped with a total of 16 Superchargers. These V4 Superchargers boast impressive charging speeds, capable of adding a 267 km range in just 15 minutes, addressing a major concern for potential EV buyers.

Strategic Footprint: Mumbai First, Delhi Next

Mumbai’s BKC showroom serves as Tesla’s official launchpad. A second showroom is expected to open in New Delhi by the end of July, expanding Tesla’s physical presence in India’s two largest urban markets. Initial deliveries will also be limited to Mumbai, Delhi, and Gurugram.

The decision to enter India follows years of dialogue between Elon Musk and the Indian government, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, reflecting India’s revised EV policy that offers reduced import duties and other incentives to global EV manufacturers, provided they commit to local manufacturing within a specified timeframe. While the current Model Y units are imported from Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory, the long-term vision may include local production.

Interior and Features:

The India-spec Tesla Model Y comes loaded with advanced features and a minimalist interior design. Key highlights include:

  • A large 15.4-inch central infotainment touchscreen for primary controls.
  • An additional 8-inch touchscreen for second-row passengers, enhancing their in-cabin experience.
  • Ventilated and heated power-adjustable front seats, and heated, electrically foldable rear seats.
  • A 9-speaker sound system and ambient interior lighting.
  • Dedicated air vents with electric controls for both front and rear rows.
  • A panoramic glass roof.
  • Eight external cameras supporting advanced driver-assistance functions, hinting at the potential for future Full Self-Driving (FSD) capabilities, though regulations will play a key role here.
  • 19-inch aero-styled wheels for improved aerodynamics and efficiency.
  • Optional interior themes like black and white at an additional cost.

Challenges and Outlook:

Tesla’s entry into India, while highly anticipated, faces challenges. The high import duties make its vehicles significantly more expensive than competitors, limiting its immediate appeal to a premium niche. Success will hinge on consumer acceptance of the higher price point, the rapid expansion of its charging network, and potential future policy changes that might encourage local manufacturing and reduce costs.

However, Tesla’s arrival is expected to catalyze growth and competition within India’s burgeoning EV market, inspiring local and international players to innovate further. As CM Devendra Fadnavis remarked, Tesla’s presence in Maharashtra is “a statement that Tesla has arrived in the right city and the right state,” signifying a transformative chapter for India’s electric mobility future.
