BMW iX: The Electric SUV That’s Redefining Luxury in India
The BMW iX has swiftly established itself as a significant player in India’s burgeoning luxury electric vehicle market. More than just an SUV, it represents BMW’s bold foray into a purely electric future, showcasing a blend of distinctive design, advanced technology, and compelling performance.
A Design That Divides, A Presence That Commands
The iX’s exterior design is undeniably polarizing. It eschews traditional BMW styling cues in favor of a futuristic and somewhat unconventional aesthetic. The massive, blanked-out kidney grille, which subtly houses an array of sensors and cameras, is a prominent feature. Sharp, slim LED headlights and taillights contribute to its sleek, modern appeal. Flush-fitting door handles, a panoramic glass roof with electrochromic shading (allowing it to switch from transparent to opaque at the touch of a button), and aerodynamic 21-inch (or optional 22-inch) wheels complete its distinctive look. While its bold lines might not appeal to everyone, its road presence is undeniable, marking it out as something truly different.

The Sanctuary Within: A Tech-Laden and Sustainable Cabin
Step inside the BMW iX, and you are greeted by a cabin that feels like a futuristic lounge. The minimalist design is dominated by a large, curved display that seamlessly integrates a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, both powered by BMW’s iDrive 8 operating system. This curved display is a centerpiece, offering crisp graphics and intuitive control through touch, voice commands, and the iconic iDrive rotary controller, which in the iX, features a crystal finish.
Sustainability is a core theme in the iX’s interior. BMW has extensively used recycled materials, including fabrics made from recycled polyester, and natural leather tanned with olive leaves, giving the cabin a unique and eco-conscious feel. The hexagonal steering wheel is another unique touch, designed for better grip and a clear view of the instrument cluster.
The iX is packed with creature comforts and cutting-edge features:
- Four-zone automatic climate control: Ensuring personalized comfort for all occupants.
- Heated and ventilated seats with massage function: Available for enhanced luxury.
- Harman Kardon or Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system: Delivering an immersive audio experience.
- Head-up display: Projecting vital information onto the windshield.
- Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto: For seamless smartphone integration.
- Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS): Including lane departure warning, blind-spot detection, front collision warning, and parking assist with a 360-degree camera.
- Integrated natural interaction: Allowing intuitive control through gestures and voice commands.
Performance and Range: The Electric Heartbeat
The BMW iX in India is primarily available in two variants: the xDrive40 and the more powerful xDrive50.
- BMW iX xDrive40: This variant is powered by a 76.6 kWh (net) battery pack and two electric motors, one on each axle, providing all-wheel drive. It produces 326 hp and 630 Nm of torque, enabling a 0-100 km/h sprint in 6.1 seconds. The WLTP claimed range for the xDrive40 is between 372-425 km.
- BMW iX xDrive50: This flagship variant features a larger 111.5 kWh (gross) battery pack (105.2 kWh net) and a dual-motor setup that delivers a robust 523 hp and 765 Nm of torque. This translates to a quicker 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 4.6 seconds. Crucially, the xDrive50 boasts a significantly enhanced WLTP claimed range of up to 635 km, with real-world tests consistently showing over 500 km, making it one of the longest-range luxury EVs in India.
Both variants support fast charging. The xDrive40 can charge at up to 150 kW DC, while the xDrive50 can handle up to 195 kW DC charging, allowing an 80% charge in around 35 minutes (for the xDrive50) or less (for the xDrive40). An 11 kW AC wallbox charger is typically offered as standard for home charging.
The ride quality of the iX is a highlight. While the xDrive40 initially came with coil springs, the xDrive50 standardizes adaptive two-axle air suspension, providing an incredibly plush and comfortable ride, even over challenging Indian roads. The intelligent all-wheel-drive system ensures excellent traction and stability.
Pricing and Market Positioning in India
The BMW iX was initially launched in India in December 2021 as a Completely Built Unit (CBU). The xDrive40 variant was introduced first, followed by the xDrive50. As of mid-2025, the BMW iX is priced in India starting around ₹1.21 Crore for the xDrive40 and going up to ₹1.40 Crore (ex-showroom) for the xDrive50.
In the luxury EV SUV segment, the iX competes with established rivals like the Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV, Audi e-tron, Audi Q8 Sportback e-tron, and Jaguar I-Pace, and more recently, the Kia EV9. Despite its distinct styling, the iX has performed exceptionally well in India, often being cited as BMW’s best-selling luxury EV, signifying a strong acceptance of its unique proposition.
The Future of Luxury Electric Mobility
The BMW iX is more than just an electric vehicle; it’s a statement. It embodies BMW’s vision for sustainable luxury, blending cutting-edge technology, responsible material use, and a refined driving experience. While its design might be unconventional, its holistic approach to electric mobility, particularly its impressive range and luxurious cabin, has resonated with Indian consumers looking for a distinctive and environmentally conscious premium SUV. As the electric revolution gains momentum, the BMW iX stands as a compelling testament to how luxury, performance, and sustainability can coexist harmoniously.
