A Recurring Tragedy: Overcrowding Claims Lives in Mumbai’s Mumbra Train Accident
Mumbai, Maharashtra – June 9, 2025 – In a grim reminder of the daily dangers faced by millions of commuters in Mumbai, a tragic incident on Monday morning claimed the lives of at least four individuals and left several injured after they fell from an overcrowded local train. The accident, which occurred between Diva and Mumbra railway stations in Thane district during peak office hours, has once again brought to the fore the persistent issue of extreme overcrowding on Mumbai’s lifeline.
The incident unfolded around 9:30 AM on the Central Railway line. According to preliminary reports, a Kasara-bound local train, already bursting at its seams, was carrying a massive number of commuters, many of whom were forced to stand on the footboards. Eyewitnesses and railway officials suggest that as two trains crossed each other on adjacent tracks, passengers precariously positioned on the footboards of both trains may have collided, causing them to lose balance and fall onto the tracks.
“There was a huge rush, and many people were standing at the doors of the train,” an official was quoted as saying, highlighting the all-too-common reality of Mumbai’s suburban railway network. The exact number of fatalities is still being ascertained, with initial reports varying between four and five, while at least seven to nine others sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals, including Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa. Tragically, some of the critically injured require immediate brain-related surgery.
The railway administration and police immediately rushed to the spot, initiating an investigation into the precise cause of the accident. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed his condolences, terming the incident “very unfortunate” and assuring that the railway administration is probing the cause. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar also expressed distress, emphasizing the urgent need to address overcrowding and enhance passenger safety.

Furthermore, all existing rakes currently in service will also be redesigned to incorporate this vital safety feature. This proactive measure aims to prevent similar accidents caused by passengers falling from open doors of moving trains.
